A review of Jim Ward’s book, “Running The Gauntlet”

By Sean Philips • May 4th, 2011 • Category: ModBlog

At times, it is humbling to me that I am writing for Modblog on this site that, many years ago, introduced me to new aspects of body modification, and for that matter, a whole new world. Several years ago (no doing of mine, mind you) Jim Ward, the father of modern body piercing, shared some of his tales on BMEzine with a feature called “Running The Gauntlet“. These articles exposed many readers to the early days of (modern professional) body piercing. They were a must read for any piercing aficionado and chock full of interesting tidbits from our modern history……….and then a few years later Jim announces he is going to take these stories and dozens more like them, and write an entire full length book chronicling his life, his passion and the modern history of body piercing.

Needless to say, I was thrilled at the prospect to be able to read more of his stories. However, I must be honest, I was a bit apprehensive. His short stories on BME were awesome, but could he possibly fill an entire book with material of the same caliber? For that matter, could he even write a book that would so captivate my ADD having self, that I would even be able to finish it?

A great piercing job, in this economy? I think so!

By Sean Philips • Jan 27th, 2011 • Category: ModBlog

I recently saw on my buddy Jareb’s facebook page that  his studio, Spider-Bite Tattoos and Body Piercings. Normally, a post like that wouldn’t have gotten my immediate attention. However, the fact it comes from the same piercer who is con stantly making post such as “just did my 40th piercing, now it’s time for lunch”, leads me to believe this is an extremely busy shop (which also happens to use high end jewelry, this is no hack shop) and is therefore a great opportunity for the right piercer. Hell, if it wasn’t in NH, I might have jumped on this one myself.

“Very busy downtown Manchester, NH tattoo and body piercing shop is looking for an experienced and licensed body piercer. Previous shop experience and valid body arts practicioner license A MUST! Please call 603-661-3449 to arrange interview! FT and PT position available!”

People of Walgreens

By Rob • Sep 29th, 2010 • Category: ModBlog

Walmart seems to have a monopoly on the crazies when it comes to shoppers.  Ok, maybe not crazy, but eccentric, as evidenced by the many images on the people of walmart website.  Now while Walmart may be the place to go to when you want to see someone walking around in an outfit created entirely of stuffed animal skins, Walgreens seems to be the place you go when you want to see attractive modified people.  If you happened to be in one recently, you may have had the opportunity to see a pretty girl like IAM: Whitney strolling down the aisle.

IAM: Whitney

Earlier in the week some people were asking what happened to the BME boys and BME girls posts on Fridays.  I don’t know the status of the calendar posts, or the regular weekly column, but what I do know is that I personally don’t see why I should save the pictures of attractive people just for Fridays, but that’s just me.

As for Whitney’s picture, it popped up in the stretched lobe gallery this morning, so I’d imagine this picture is fairly recent.

Tall tales

One of my favorite features on BME’s main site is the experience section. People contribute stories of their experiences with their own modifications, which are then reviewed by a panel of community members. If your story is really well written, then it may get featured. I’ve selected some recently featured experiences for your reading enjoyment.

A little taste of #2:

“I’ve come to tattooing perhaps way too early in life. In the years between my 14th and 18th birthdays I acquired between 10-12 (depending on how you look at it) tattoos with my parent’s approval. At that time I took tattoos to be a fashion statement rather then the form of personal express I now view them as many years later. Impulsive as a teen I made a few bad tattooing mistakes (Actually I just made a lot of mistakes in general). But one tattoo in particular was an experience that has affected me throughout my adult life.”

Mustache me not!

I checked his page to figure out what the meaning behind the tattoo was but he hasn’t posted in a while so hopefully he’ll give us some insight into what his tattoo means or stands for. I’d also like to know if the tattoo is healed or not. It’s incredibly vibrant like it’s new without any apparent redness or swelling.

As promised

Abeo is a very lovely girl with big bright eyes. In between those pretty big eyes of hers, Matt from Mystic Piercing in Crofton, MD has placed a lovely 10ga septum retainer. She’s also nicely matched all of her jewelry with black jewelry, which I’m also a fan of. I guess I don’t need to mention that I think she’s a pretty lady now do I?
