I’m just going to come right out and say it. This post may upset some people. The reason is that to some the person portrayed in the portrait is a nazi war criminal, yet to others, he was a hero who was found guilty of crimes he didn’t personally commit. I’ll start by letting the artist, Nick Bertioli tell the story of how this came to be.

The client was from Serbia, didn’t speak a word of English nor French and wanted the Portrait of Draza Mihailovic (someone was translating for him,so glad!) i had no clue who that was.So i did a few researches online and most website say he was a leader of one of the two anti-fascist movements during the Second World War,so i accepted to do it (done in 6hrs).But back home i looked again and found out he might have been associated with the Nazis and Italian communists and that doesn’t sound right.I wonder where the truth is.Nowadays it’s hard to believe whats told to us.i don’t know if i should put this in my portoflio.
Now I did some reading, just as Nick did, and found the same things. Personally, I don’t know what the truth is, but I can see both sides of the argument given the small amount of reading I did. So what do you think? Should Nick remove this from his portfolio? The work itself is excellent, but is the controversial aspect of the subject matter outweigh the quality of the artwork. There’s also the matter of the language barrier. As a tattoo artist Nick may choose not to do pieces that could be considered nazi-related, but because of the story he was told he thought it was alright. So what do you guys think?
Nick works at Eurotribal in Paris.
