BME Finalists Round Two

I feel like a teacher handing out extra credit assignments but I need help to pick the winners for the BME World Tour. I’ve just narrowed it down to 10 finalists who will all need to complete an assignment.  If you want to know who the finalists have been narrowed down to, you’ll have to watch the video!

More information on the assignement after the jump!

The assignment really isn’t “extra credit” because if you don’t do it, you’ll be automatically disqualified from the contest. Since I know that everyone is working, I’m going to give this round of finalists until Thursday at Midnight PST to turn in their assignments. They will then be posted on the following Friday for votes by Modblog readers!

Send the following to [email protected].

Since we will be taking photos, writing blog posts and posting videos of our travels, I want the 10 finalists that I have selected to do the same. We will be posting these on a daily basis but since I know that everyone has other full time jobs on their plate, I am giving you until Thursday to turn this in. You’ll need to be able to do this on a daily basis when we’re on the tour.

Make a video, take some photos and write up a blog post about your day. You can do whatever you’d like with it. If you’re a student in school, just make a video about your day. If you’ve got time and you want to pretend we’re out on the road and you want to go interview a shop, do that. Are you going to a concert or some touristy spot during the week? Take photos and videos and write a post about that. There is a ton of flexibility. It doesn’t necessarily need to be “modification based” since the tour will include a lot of BME related stuff but also a lot of stuff about the people that we meet and the tour interns themselves.

Remember to have fun with it. This is your chance to show me what you’ll be able to come up with while we’re out on the road.

You’ve also got a lot of options for how you can record the video. Use your point and shoot camera, a flip cam, an ipod, an iphone, your laptop, or a real video camera! You’ve got tons of options, just remember to get everything in to me by Thursday or you’ll get disqualified!

Thanks again to all of the applicants. I’m sorry that I couldn’t take everyone but I felt it was best to try to narrow it down to my top 10 favorites so that I didn’t waste everyone’s time by making them do the assignment if it wasn’t likely that they’d get picked. My top 10 definitely changed after the last post and I’m glad that I put the finalist up and got to see how people carried themselves under criticism since BME is has a very large and vocal audience. You have to be able to take the good compliments with the bad comments.

To the finalists who did not make it on to this round, all of you are incredibly talented and there are several of you that I would like to offer opportunities to write on Modblog and as well as for BME. I’ll be contacting you as soon as things quiet down!

Thanks again to everyone who applied!

  1. You can barely see your black eye, Rachel! Vast difference from the photo you posted on Tumblr the other day!

Looking forward to seeing the videos, y’all! 😉

  2. So Rachel ends with “Don’t post who the winners are in the comments”.

For anyone with hearing impairments, email me, I’ll tell you. 🙂

  3. Good luck to everyone who’s still in the running. I look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with for their assignments. 🙂

That’s a great top 10 and I think whoever makes it will have an amazing adventure.

  4. Hey Rachel,

Is there a time range for the video? I’ve watched the video twice now and didn’t hear one. Thank you so much!!!

  5. I haven’t actually talked to Rachel about it but since she didn’t say and I’m pretty sure YouTube caps at 10, I’m saying 10. 🙂

  6. Really wish I had made it into the second round (who doesn’t want to see an awesome video about living in south central LA and making milkshakes?), but good luck to everyone involved and hope you have a great time. It was cool to see people vote for me even though I’m a new face on BME, so thanks for that. Also, thanks to Rachel and BME for putting me in the first round of finalists.

    Thanks thanks thanks basically.

  7. Caleigh – It wasn’t totally up to voters. Ultimately, it’s Rachel’s decision and the voting was just to help solidify her decision and/or take a 2nd look at someone if they got a lot of votes. The votes otherwise don’t mean much.

  8. Timothy had very limited availability for the tour which is why he didn’t make it into the final round. I said in the original application process that preference would be given to those that had the most availability.

Ill add the finalists in text in a couple days after people have watched the video.

  9. @Caleigh – After some “snooping” I noticed you were from Montreal. Did you check out the Nuit Blanche tonight?

  10. Aw, Rachel, I love your videos! My mama had a deviated septum and had it corrected as well… which left her with a rather large hole in it, so she can whistle through her nose. Fun fact!

Good luck to the remaining finalists!

  11. Good luck everybody! I think you’re all amazing. And all the videos, even the sucky ones, show how much people care about BME and want to be involved. I think that’s really inspiring.

  12. I really can’t wait to see what the finalists from this round come up with.

For our hearing impaired, the 10 finalists are: Ed, Thad, Megan, Chez, Richard, Darah, Kaelahbee, RobW, Ferg and Nae.

I look forward to seeing what they turn in! It’s going to be awesome!

  13. Rachel,

Thanks for specifying why I didn’t make the final round, I appreciate that.
I knew my limited availability would hurt my chances and almost didn’t apply based on that.
However, I figured it was better to let you decide if the timing worked, than to not apply at all.
    🙂

    Thanks for the opportunity!

    Tim.

  14. No problem Tim, I would have loved to have you and I’m hoping you can join us for a bit while we’re in Australia but I have to give priority to those who can keep costs down by being on the tour for as long as possible.

    Thank you for understanding!

  15. Oh wow, these guys were the cream of the crop for sure. I’m actually happier for them than I probably would have been for myself, because I just know how great they are and how much the deserve it.

Good luck guys and I can’t wait to see what you do for the assignment!

I’m sure Ed’s will be interesting because he seems like such a quirky, fun kinda guy.

  16. Good luck to all of the finalists. I think all of them with the exception of one paticular finalist, would make a great choice for an internship spot. However, that is all based on person preference and I am confident that no matter what the outcome happens to be that Rachel will have made the best decision, because as mentioned she has more information on each applicant.

  17. I really want to submit a late entry video all done with finger puppets, but alas with work and my other projects I just don’t have the time 🙁

  18. For sure, Megan. I guess just add me on Facebook? Search Ari Oh and you should probably find me.

  19. 2 finalists have already turned in their videos and one finalist has withdrawn from the contest.. OoO!! Things are heating up!

  20. I hope whoever withdrew is alright. I mean to get this far and have to pass had to be some kind of emergency or maybe they got finalist in another round the world tour. One that last 4 months.

  21. If someone withdrew, you should pick another person for the top 10 finalists… *wink wink* Haha!

  22. PS, maybe someone whose university is writing a story about them being in this contest for the school paper? *wiiiink wink* 😀

  23. PS, maybe someone whose university is writing a story about them being in this contest for the school paper? *wiiiiiiiink wink* 😀

  24. They didn’t realize the length of the trip? Did they not read the original post? Correct me if I am wrong, but I read that it was going to be a 2-3 month trip…

  25. Gurthanthaclops: They thought it was going to be 6 weeks not up to 3 months.

Ari: I’d love to add in another finalists but I’m having a hard enough time picking the final four that I don’t want to make it any harder for me to choose the final four (or 5!)

  26. Haha no worries, I was just speaking up in case that was a possibility! Good luck choosing.

  27. I see. Would be a shame if she/he was one of the more qualified finalists (not saying the others are not!)

  28. Gurthanthaclops: It’s always a bummer when someone who makes it this far in a contest as big as this one has to drop off but they have a lot going on in their lives and a world tour of their own that had already been planned.

I wish everyone the best of luck! I have the finalist post ready to go, I’m just waiting on the last 3 assignments to be turned in tomorrow and then it will be up for your viewing pleasure! With each submission I get more and more excited.
